Hello! And farewell for a little while: this newsletter will take a short break to rest, recuperate, relax, and come back and start all over again. We'll be back no later than January 3! Until thenโ€ฆ

Huawei's foldable reveal

What's new:

We've seen the design before, which features the double circular elements on the front cover, along with the 1.04-inch round display and a triple camera. When opened, the P50 Pocket features a 6. 9-inch at 120Hz and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 4G chipset, so no 5G to meet US regulations There's also a 4,000mAh battery, beating the Flip's 3,300mAh capacity 3, and it's slightly thinner than the Flip 3 at the hinge point, and a uniform thickness, rather than tapering:

And the price: 8,988 yuan, or about $1.4.10 in China, or 10,988 yuan (~$1,725), with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for the premium Gold Edition. The Galaxy Z Flip 3's $999 looks like a steal by comparison.

What else:

Huawei also showed up in a rather odd, possibly useful, fluorescent photography mode via a 32MP super-spectrum sensor used in the triple rear camera, and first found on the P30 and P30 Pro. This lets you checking if you've removed makeup or applied sunscreen correctly, which could be helpful, but probably needs to be tried before commenting further.

But is this device important?

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, pushed the female angle during the announcement, saying, "It's very delicateโ€ฆ We want to bring elegance to you, on the go. And that's is great and all but you can't really buy it Huawei has yet to talk about markets other than China, and of course the lack of compatibility with Google is a let down for many, although the AppGallery of Huawei is still mentioned by Huawei as better than ever. It's good to see, but it won't do much beyond the interest of enthusiasts, although the adoption in China is interesting.

The flexible OLED isn't just for foldables, it features LG Display's CES concepts: a cool bike setup and a weird "Media Chair" that brings a 55-inch curved OLED screen to your face when you're seated. (AndroidAuthority).

Throwback Thursday

Remember when we only had the Hubble Telescope up there in space? Well, finally, a giant new telescope is heading into orbit:

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be launched from French Guiana, on the back of an Ariane 5 rocket, successor to the Hubble telescope, launched in 1990.

Anyway, it cost $10 billion, and it's got scientists and astronomers all over the world very excited. ARC Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics in 3D, Australian National University:

โ€œThe James Webb Space Telescope is by far the largest infrared telescope ever launched into space. With its exquisite sensitivity, the James Webb will unveil the mysteries of the universe that have been hidden from us until now. , James Webb will reveal the very first galaxies formed in the nascent universe and how these galaxies evolved over 13 billion years of cosmic time. We will get an unprecedented picture of the formation and evolution of galaxies like our Milky Way. We will measure how the elements responsible for life: oxygen, carbon and nitrogen, formed and evolved over 13 billion years of cosmic time. "James Webb will also reveal which elements found in the atmosphere around extrasolar planets. The big questions that James Webb intends to answer concern all our origins and our place in the universe: are we unique? Is our Earth unique? Is the Milky Way unique? What are our origins?

All of these questions sound like good questions to answer!

The current launch time is December 25 at 7:20 a.m. ET, and you can stream it here. I mean, it's pretty early for a vacation, but with kids, parents, dogs, and reindeer, you you'll be up early to see what's under the tree anyway, won't you?

All the best, and catch you in a week and a bit!
