Huawei launches HarmonyOS, its operating system for smartphones and connected objects

Blacklisted by the United States and deprived of an Android license for two years for national security reasons, Huawei on Wednesday launched HarmonyOS, its new proprietary operating system.

A larger ecosystem, from smartphones to connected objects

With HarmonyOS, the Chinese firm does not want to replace Android or iOS. Its ambition is to extend the application of its operating system to a larger ecosystem, including its smartphones, including the future P50 and P50 Pro models, its tablets, televisions, but also its connected objects and even electric cars. . The Chinese multinational specializing in telecommunications is thus trying to attract other players, such as manufacturers of equipment or household appliances. Over 500,000 developers have already started building apps based on HarmonyOS.

Interoperability at the heart of HarmonyOS

Huawei's new operating system brings better interoperability between the brand's various devices by grouping them through a single control panel. This new portal aims to facilitate the connection of a device connected to the smartphone, by reducing the latency time and the different steps (pairing, authentication and connection confirmation), in order to offer a better user experience.

A plug-in will allow devices, which are not powered by HarmonyOS, to be able to communicate with Huawei devices. For example, if you want to transfer your photos from a Windows laptop to your Huawei phone, the operation will be possible provided you have installed the plug-in on your laptop.

This is not the first time that major tech players have tried to launch their own operating system. Alibaba has tried to get into the deep end with AliOS, based on Linux, and Samsung with Tizen, but the latter is currently limited to certain connected objects, such as Smart TVs. Despite the loss of a significant part of its market, Huawei remains one of the leading smartphone brands in China. HarmonyOS could allow him to convince developers who would not be satisfied with Android.
