For several months, rumors have regularly mentioned the return of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor with the iPhone 13. According to journalist Mark Gurman, Apple thought about it, but decided to favor Face ID.

On paper, Face ID is faster than Touch ID. In reality, especially in a pandemic period where wearing a mask is required, Face ID is rather restrictive. Owners of a recent iPhone are forced to enter their code as soon as they wear a mask, can no longer pay quickly with Apple Pay and, if they want to eliminate the constraint of the code, have no choice but to wear an Apple Watch. The Covid-19 has deprived Face ID of its magic.

For several months, some leaks have suggested that Apple has decided to reintroduce Touch ID, its fingerprint sensor launched with the iPhone 5s in 2013, with its future iPhone 13. Unfortunately, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple would stick to its guns and maintain Face ID as the only solution for unlocking its iPhone 13.

Apple wants to hide Face ID under the screen

iPhone 13s should not have under-screen fingerprint sensor

Mark Gurman indicates that prototype iPhones do have a Touch ID fingerprint sensor under the screen. However, this technology will not be commercialized this year. Eventually, Apple would like all high-end iPhones to have invisible facial recognition technology thanks to a TrueDepth camera hidden under the screen, like the front sensor of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. affordable, two scenarios would be possible. The first, quite conservative, would see Apple continue to use a notch with Face ID. The second would be to abandon facial recognition in favor of Touch ID under the screen. In other words, it is unlikely to see Face ID and Touch ID coexist one day.

In the Android universe, in-screen fingerprint sensors have become the norm since late 2018. Most high-end smartphones can be unlocked using an optical or ultrasonic reader located under their OLED screen. The technology is proven and has improved tremendously since its inception. Few manufacturers still rely on facial recognition like Apple.

Logically, the 2021-2022 iPhones should be introduced next month during a special event. Tim Cook and his teams will thus put an end to the rumors about these products.
