On the occasion of Galaxy Unpacked in the summer of 2021, Samsung has just unveiled its new connected watches, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.

It's time for accessories! Samsung's summer Galaxy Unpacked is an opportunity for the manufacturer to present its new line of folding smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, but not only. The Korean giant also unveiled new headphones, but also its two highly anticipated new watches, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic. To put them back in the catalog, they replace the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Galaxy Watch 3 respectively.

If these watches are particularly expected, it is above all for their software part. As presented at Google I/O, Samsung has worked hand in hand with Google to improve Wear OS and offer a new version with its own interface. Farewell Tizen, welcome One UI Watch!

To go further What are the best connected watches in 2022?

Two Galaxy Watch 4, different, but similar

Whether it is Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, both watches offer the same technical characteristics and the same functionalities. Only the design differs. The Watch 4 aims to be modern, minimalist with a sleek aluminum chassis and a sweat-resistant silicone strap.

The Watch 4 Classic, on the other hand, is more premium with a design in stainless steel “and other luxury materials”. We also find what has made the hallmark of Samsung watches: the rotating ring around the edge of the screen (replaced by a tactile gesture on the simple version).

Focus on health

Both Galaxy Watch 4s continue to push their health-related features. We find on board a blood pressure sensor, an electrocardiogram (ECG), as well as a new Samsung BioActive 3-in-1 sensor which is used both for the ECG, for photoplethysmography (to detect changes in volume blood) and for bio-impedance.

For a holistic view of your health, the Galaxy Watch 4 displays, thanks to all these sensors, a detailed view of your body composition (BMI, fat, muscle levels, etc.). Enough to achieve your goal, whatever it is (weight loss, muscle gain, etc.).

Samsung's smartwatches offer a variety of activity trackers as always, with more than 100 different workouts that can be linked to a Samsung Smart TV for a big-screen sports program, like what Apple Fitness+ offers.

Sleep is no exception

But health isn't just about physical activity. Good sleep is just as essential. That's why the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic now offer snoring detection and continuous monitoring of blood oxygenation (SpO2) during sleep. In the morning, you will thus obtain a sleep score and a lot of information to follow your nights.

Wear OS, Powered by Samsung

Until now, Wear OS could not be customized by manufacturers. Now, the partnership between Samsung and Google has allowed the former to use the latter's OS while making its own improvements.

The main interest for Samsung is of course to take advantage of the huge ecosystem of applications offered by Wear OS via the Google Play Store, like Google Maps for example which takes full advantage of the integrated compass to guide you without rest on your smartphone. You will also be able to use Spotify (even offline). We obviously find Samsung applications, such as Samsung Pay, SmartThings and Bixby.

Added to this are improvements such as gestures to take a call, to refuse it, or to perform a predefined action.

Synchronization with the smartphone

The Galaxy Watch 4 also synchronizes to the maximum with your smartphone. If you set an alarm on your smartphone, block numbers or activate do not disturb mode, your smartwatch will do the same automatically. An auto-installation mode also allows compatible applications to be downloaded directly to your Galaxy Watch 4 when you download it to your smartphone.

The Galaxy Buds Pro also enter this well-crafted ecosystem, with for example intelligent detection of the source device and the display of battery information on the Galaxy Watch 4.

A new chip for better autonomy

One of Wear OS's biggest problems is certainly its processor. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 and 4100 that equip the majority of connected watches today are aging. Samsung therefore arrives with a brand new chip, the Exynos W920, with 5 nm engraving, with a much faster CPU and GPU. RAM and storage have also been increased compared to previous generations for increased user comfort.

The battery should allow up to 40 hours of use, for a recharge in 2 hours. As often, two versions are available for each model: Bluetooth only, or with 4G LTE connectivity to free yourself from the smartphone during your outings.

Galaxy Watch 4 price and release date

Despite all these improvements, the price of the Galaxy Watch 4 remains contained. Count 269 euros for the Galaxy Watch 4 (in 42 mm) and 369 euros for the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic (in 40 mm). If you want a 4G version, the prices go up to 319 and 419 euros respectively.

Both are available for pre-order today and through August 26. The marketing will take place on August 27.
