In all likelihood, the resulting potential hacks could have been avoided.

One more. Cybersecurity researchers at Check Point have managed to identify (it seems in time) a major breach in the code of the WhatsApp messaging application, among the most popular in all countries. A work that follows a previous study of the FormBook virus on macOS, but whose hypothetical financial reward remains unknown.

The incident spotted by the developers still required hackers to go through a series of relatively complex operations to achieve their ends. It was indeed necessary to send an infected attachment to a victim, who then had to apply a filter to it before sending it back to the attacker. Facebook would not have found any proof of the exploitation of this bug by a black hat.

iOS already protected

The good news is that the publisher of WhatsApp was able to release an update quickly after being alerted to this flaw in November last year. An improved version of the app was thus launched in early 2021, putting an end to the danger in question. In addition, version numbered 2.21.1.13 of the platform and currently available now has two new ways to check the integrity of a file edited with a filter. In short, Internet users are safe.

This case nevertheless reminds us that no protection is truly without risk, including when a service guarantees the confidentiality of its personal data by end-to-end encryption. An argument that has become the spearhead of many market players, such as Apple in its communication campaigns in recent years.

Mass desertions

Personal Content Exposed to Security Vulnerability WhatsApp security

Recent polls tend to prove that WhatsApp is no longer unanimous among consumers. Many are thus aware of the multiple scandals related to the breach of privacy of which the company is accused. This is when they turn to alternatives considered more reliable, even if not always. Telegram and Signal are the leaders of this international migration. And in France, how many have taken the plunge? Everything suggests that the figures are also substantial.
