Amazfit, as its name suggests, is a brand specializing in accessories and connected objects aimed at sports.

With the T-Rex Pro, Amazfit is focusing on robustness this time. To prove it, the manufacturer ensures that the watch has passed 15 military certificates. That's all well and good, but if you want to make it your connected watch for everyday life, what does it want?

Amazfit T-Rex ProDesign

During my test, it was not uncommon for my friends to point out what I was wearing on my wrist. throwing me sentences like: "it looks like a children's watch". So of course, Frandroid is not a fashion site, and my friends may have bad taste, but we must admit that the design of the Amazfit T-Rex Pro did not particularly flatter my retina.

Some will say, and they will be right, that this is not what she seeks to accomplish either. This Amazfit is a connected watch essentially focused on two dimensions: robustness and sports activities. We could even imagine having a different use of a classic connected watch, where we would only take it out during a hike, a trek or any sporting outing.

It is also resistant to water, and even to diving, up to 10 bar, about 100 meters according to the manufacturer. It can also, depending on the manufacturer, withstand temperatures reaching 70°C or -40°C.

If we go into more detail about why my friends allowed themselves to make fun of the device I was wearing on my wrist, it probably comes from the materials that make it up. The body is in polycarbonate, and the strap in silicone rubber. Each element of the watch, whether it is the fixed and greyish bezel, the finishes which are not very high-end and the font... the whole thing gives a somewhat "toy" cachet to the watch. We are far from the classicism offered by leather bracelets for example, or bodies comprising metal.

Proportions to review

Nevertheless. When it comes to the fateful question of comfort, I wore the watch almost continuously (except most nights) for two weeks, and I was never bothered by its material. The four buttons have a finely grainy touch that is not unpleasant and offers a nice finish.

Amazfit T-Rex review Pro: a watch that does not play it easy

On the other hand, what sometimes bothered me a bit was more its rather daunting dimensions. The watch measures 47.7 x 47.7 x 13.5 mm and weighs 59.4 grams. That's a lot for a watch, even if it's named after a dinosaur. In use, it is still something that we notice. Especially when the crucial moment comes to choose the adjustment of the bracelet. We either have the impression of no longer letting the blood circulate, but of having a well-anchored bracelet, or we loosen the bracelet, and it floats too much. Afterwards, all things considered, it remains within reasonable limits, and I was not unduly bothered by this defect.

On the lower part, there are the traditional sensors, as well as two magnets for charging. The bracelet, in addition to sporting a standard format of 22 m, is firmly attached by four small black screws, which suggests a repair (if necessary) very easy to perform.

Amazfit T-Rex ProDisplay

The OLED display is round and measures 1.3 inches. It displays an HD definition, with 360 pixels by 360. This gives a pixel density of 277 pixels per inch. It's more than enough not to distinguish the pixels on the screen and that's all we ask.

It also benefits from an automatic brightness management function. In case of high ambient light, the amount of light delivered by the screen may be lacking, but overall, the amount of light seemed sufficient to me.

The screen offers a very effective Always on display mode that adapts to different dials. On a dial with hands for example, it only leaves the hands and everything else is off. Also, note that fingerprints do not print on the screen at all.

Among my little regrets about this screen, I could cite the fact that by tapping it twice, it does not turn on, a gesture that seems quite natural to me. Other than that, it does its job very well.

Amazfit T-Rex Pro Health features

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro packs a slew of sensors, including an optical PPG bio-tracking sensor, a 3-axis acceleration sensor , a 3-axis gyroscope, a geomagnetic sensor, an ambient light sensor and a barometer.

With this watch on your wrist, you can therefore measure your number of steps, your heart rate (there is no electrocardiogram), your SpO2, but not your VO2Max.

There is also a stress monitoring which remains very limited, or a sleep monitoring which is a little more talkative. Indeed, it tells you your different phases of sleep, divided into three types: light sleep, paradoxical sleep and deep sleep.

The health data is pretty clear. The heart rate can be measured almost continuously.

On the other hand, I found the software tracking on the application quite heartbreaking. A score is given to you each night. And this score is associated with a smiley. It's very simple, I've always seen him angry. No matter how much progress I made from one night to the next, I never managed to feel where I could put my efforts to improve.

For a watch focused on sports activity, Amazfit has gone all out by offering more than a hundred different activities. We can thus draw from a list including the elliptical trainer, Tai-Chi or even Biathlon.

Jogging and GPS

I personally used it for a few short jogging sessions. I was able to choose a race goal based on distance, but of course I could have decided to aim for a specific time. Then the race starts and every kilometer, I received an audible alert telling me my journey time in my headphones, coupled to my smartphone.

For those who prefer to run without earphones, note that a nice vibration of the watch will highlight a terminal in a lens, and that at any time, the interface of the watch allows you to know where you are. .

I was a little disappointed with the GPS tracking, though. When it is not helped by a smartphone, it tends to deactivate constantly during an activity, even in very open places. Another concern, we can not manage the scrolling of his music while running for example. Still, it's a pity. Another missed opportunity, it is not possible to add more applications, apart from a small handful, all geared towards sport.

After an activity, the application gives you a complete report of the efforts made. A large number of variables are displayed in the activity reports The heart rate measured is divided into various categories, to better situate yourself

All these small defects are very regrettable, since the essential is there to make a beautiful watch intended to athletes. We appreciate, for example, that during an activity, the heart rate is constantly measured, to give at the end a very complete report on the effort provided.

Depending on the health data previously entered and the measurements taken, the watch indicates in percentage how much effort has been made or not.

It also indicates the estimated time needed to recover, or the load that this training represented compared to another.

All the data collected also leads the watch to provide PAI points (for Personal Activity intelligence), which assess the quality of the efforts made. Welcome feedback.

Amazfit T-Rex ProUsage and Application

Amazfit T-Rex Pro uses RTOS as its operating system.

To find the different menus, you can use either buttons or gestures. Here is what the buttons are for:

Here are the gestures at our disposal:

In use, it's almost too much and you almost come out of it lost, as the whole thing seems rather poorly arranged.

However, once you have entered a menu, you benefit from an interface that is generally quite clear and that knows how to get straight to the point without unnecessary chatter.

I also liked that the cinema mode or the "mute notifications" mode were available so quickly (in the shortcuts pane).

The overall experience of the T-Rex Pro interface is therefore quite good, even if we are sorely lacking in details on its activity

Zepp application

In reality, the bulk of the statistical feedback goes through the Zepp companion application, which a notice slipped into the box suggests that we install from our first moments with the machine.

Some people won't appreciate not being able to do everything from their watch. For my part, I liked having the choice, if I wanted to, to dive a little more into its use by opening the application, or to be content with less intense use by remaining just on the data visible on the show.

The level of settings for the watch is satisfactory Home page of the menu dedicated to the watch in Zepp On the store, it is possible to extend the number of dials

To give a little more detail on this point: the data on sleep, stress, but also detailed exercise histories… all these elements are only available on the Zepp app.

This also allows you to enter a little more into the details of the configuration of the watch. For example, we have access to a blind with a string of additional dials. It should be noted, however, that the themes often remain quite masculine and heavily focused on numbers.

In order to configure it effectively, you will have to play a little with the authorizations and the management of notifications on your phone.

Amazfit T-Rex ProAutonomy

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro has a 390 mAh battery. By turning on absolutely all the sensors so that they rotate in a loop, she managed to last four whole days. With more sober use, I reached 10 days of use very quietly. It is therefore a really good autonomy compared to high-end models which take for some one or two days maximum.

To fill this bottomless tank, a two-prong magnetic charge is offered. Given the autonomy offered, the charging time is more than honest.

Here are the results that I was able to measure starting from 10% autonomy:

Amazfit T-Rex ProCommunication

The Amazfit T-Rex Pro is Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and does not support calls. It is therefore not compatible with an e-SIM and cannot be connected to Wi-Fi. The same applies to NFC payments.

On the other hand, in terms of geolocation, you can count on GPS, Galielo, Glonass and Beidou compatibility.
