The Honor 50 is the first smartphone launched by Honor in France since its independence. If his look is more than familiar as we will see in this full test of the device, it should be noted that he signs the return of Google services (Play Store, Gmail, YouTube, Maps ...) on the phones of the brandChinese in the West.

Is this comeback successful?

Honor 50design

In terms of design, the Honor 50 has a major asset: its lightness.By displaying 175 grams on the scale, it offers a grip of the most comfortable, especially since it is fine with its 7.78 mm thickness.

That's not all.The slightly curved screen enjoys a particular treatment to ensure that there is no unpleasant feeling under the finger at the junction between the front and rear faces. The Honor 50 certainly does not have the price of the most premium smartphones on the market, but it does not have much to envy them on the quality of the finish ... except perhaps at the level of the punch which, depending on the colorwhich appears around, seems really imposing on the slab front.

However, we can discuss the aesthetic bias of the brand. There are indeed three colors: black, constelled green and a third where the "Honor" logo is registered a large number of times. The first is very sober and classic, the last one is quite original and will appeal to possible aficionados, but the second ... How to say?We tested the Honor 50 in Green Constelled and this smartphone did not go unnoticed with its very marked glitter effect.

I am not at all fond of this look, but I will let you make your own opinion on the question.Just know that this is clearly not a discreet appearance and Passe-Partout.This color wants you to put you in the center with its constellation of small brilliant points.

Another thing: the Honor 50 has exactly the same design as the Huawei Nova 9.Yet the two Chinese brands have not been officially linked since Honor was sold. The brand explains that the designs have been designed before its independence and that it is therefore normal, in the medium term, to see very similar products.

In the meantime, we end up with a Honor 50 which takes up, among other things, the same photo module as that of Nova 9.Two imposing circles placed vertically in the upper left corner of the back thus house four sensors. The most important occupies the top round alone.

There too, the aesthetics challenges because it is out of the ordinary. The module remains a little protruding, which makes the phone wobbly when it rests on a table.

Test du Honor 50 : tout en nuances

For the rest, we have touches of volume and restart placed on the right edge and, at the bottom, a USB-C port in the middle of a loudspeaker and a drawer for the Nano SIM.

Honor 50 Scan

Regarding the screen, we are on a rather classic formula: 6.57 inches, OLED, FULL HD+ and 120 HZ mode adaptive. And it works rather well with perfect contrast and maximum brightness that flirts with the 700 CD/m².

By default, the Honor 50 is configured on the bright colors mode which, as its name suggests, will put the package to bring out the shades. This is how we end up with tones that tend towards blue as evidenced by the average temperature measured at 7370 k by our probe and the Calman Portrait Displays software. For a top balance, we are targeting 6500 k, but it is not a real defect, it is quite classic to boost colors.

Where the Honor 50 could have been a little better, it is in terms of the plurality of colors that he knows how to display. The phone thus easily covers the 130 % SRGB colorimetric space.Nevertheless, on a more difficult exercise, the DCI-P3 space larger and therefore more difficult to manage, it only offers a coverage rate of 87 %.It is not very serious, but it is perfectible.

Note also that the Honor 50 is quite correct on the loyalty of the colors it displays. To measure this, we got to the Middle Delta E on the DCI-P3.If this index approaches 3, this is a very good result. The phone tested here runs rather at 4.5, it's not bad.

Honor 50Logiel

The software part. This is something else that hasn't changed since Honor's independence. The smartphone we test here runs under Magic Ui which, in reality, is a copy of Emui, Huawei's interface.

However, there is a major difference today: the Honor 50 benefits from Google services.Play store and applications such as Gmail, YouTube, Drive or Maps are preinstalled on this device.Indeed, the brand is no longer struck by the same embargo as Huawei. Its Magic UI 4 interface.2 allows you to see what should have looked like the software experience of a Huawei smartphone in an alternative reality where American sanctions would not have taken place.

The visual identity, the organization of the menus, the themes proposed by default, the options ... everything is reminiscent of EMUI.We are therefore evolving in known ground. One can also wonder if these similarities are also due to the fact that Honor simply did not have time to drastically change his interface or if Huawei continues to collaborate with Honor - despite their separation - to provide him with a license.authorizing to use the EMUI base.

Note that the application drawer is not activated by default. Il faudra aller faire un tour dans le menu Écran d’accueil & fond d’écran pour changer ce paramètre. It is also in this same section that we find an icon option to change the style of apps icons a little. It’s always nice as a functionality.

Know that the Honor 50 runs on Android 11 with a security patch dating from September when we write this test.On the side of SVOD services, no concern a priori. The phone takes advantage of DRM Widevine at the safety level L1.Translation: your series and films are well supposed to be read in HD quality.

Honor 50audio

Nothing very special to say on the audio component. With a single speaker, the Honor 50 does not really know how to simulate a spatialization of the sound. It is doing quite well in terms of sound quality in itself, but don't expect something incredible. The mediums are managed effectively, the Aigues and the Basses are a little behind.Classic, no more or less.

For helmets and wired headphones, you will have to go through the USB-C port. For wireless, you can count on the audio codecs SBC, AAC, LDAC, APTX, APTX HD.

Honor 50photo

The Honor takes advantage of four sensors on the back:

The Honor 50 // Source Photo Module: Robin Wycke

The photos taken with the main sensor tend to have a little too hot colorimetry and a pushed contrast a little too far.Admittedly, this kind of treatment can appeal to a very large part of the users, but with the Honor 50 the scene is sometimes distorted, surreal to excess at the level of the Blues or the plant tones).

It’s a bit of a shame given that the level of details is for the time being treated as it should be.Also pay attention to the Lens flare effects which can intervene on a priori harmless shots like that captured for stands in the gallery below.I specify in passing that all these shots were produced without HDR mode and without the IA function (which do not change the two of them).

In low light, this too contrasting and saturated aspect of colors is diminished, but it is the level of details that suffers in return.A prevalent impression of Flu is indeed invited into the photos. And depending on the lighting conditions, the colorimetry flies from time to time despite everything to go in peanuts.

Fortunately, the Honor 50 has a really effective night mode. Not only does he recover the most obscure areas of the image well, but he manages to better highlight several details for a cliché more pleasant to watch. It's a franc yes and it's worth waiting for a few seconds motionless.

The Honor 50 also offers a 108 megapixel mode for better detailed photos, but also much heavier.By approaching very closely, we can indeed see that the level of sharpness is significantly better with this activated option.

On the side of the Ultra Grand Angle, the sharpness falls drastically compared to classical shots. In return, the colors are much closer to reality while remaining pleasant to look at, despite some chromatic aberrations on the edges of the image.

Some will also unfortunately retain as by these notable differences in treatment, the ultra-angle and the main sensor do not ensure good colorimetric coherence.Note that at night, you will not be able to get much.

Let's go to portrait mode: it is perfectible. The Bokeh effect is interesting, but causes some unsightly artifacts. On the curly hair of Titouan (on the left), the delimitation between the net and blurred elements is sorely lacking in finesse, while in the photo of Cassim (on the right), one would believe that my colleague applied frost on the head,While this effect is purely due to the clarity artificially boosted by the Honor 50.

Regarding macro mode, I have seen the worst, but the function remains very anecdotal. The 32 megapixel sensor on the front ensures correct selfies, but the face is sometimes a little soft, the image lacking in Pique.

For the video, the Honor 50 knows how to film in 4K at 30 fps or 1080p at 60 fps.Beyond that, the smartphone wants to position itself as a vlog tool and therefore offers a multi-video option. This makes it possible to use both the rear camera and the one at the front for recordings with the screen split into two parts or with a sticker displaying your head.

It is in this part of the camera that we also find the storia function. This wants to help you use the multi-video option as well as possible. The phone will then offer you some "love travel", "make -up", "warm moments", "exercise", etc..I personally opted for "party" mode.

The Honor 50 then accompanied me to do a video editing in five plans whose durations are pre-determinated by the phone (between 3 and 4.3 seconds). In a corner of the screen, a sticker showed me an example of use to properly use this option.I offer below my first attempt as imperfect as authentic.

Music and text have been added automatically and I can't help seeing in my creation a failed version of the credits of the sitcom the Office.

A great moment of television and fun ...

Honor 50performances

With its rather reasonable price - at least when compared to the prices charged on the premium segment -, the Honor 50 does not seek to equip itself with the most sophisticated Soc on the planet. The chip he embarks, however, does not have to be ashamed of his performance. The Snapdragon 778G does the job well in the vast majority of the tasks it is confronted with.

I want it as proof that, on Fortnite, the Honor 50 offers the highest graphic quality (epic) by default.Even by adjusting the 100 %"3D resolution" option, you can enjoy a rather fluid game experience in 30 fps.Stability is still put to the test when there is a lot of animations on the screen. On a few fractions of seconds, the game thus falls to 15 or 20 fps almost systematically in these situations.

We can also see that, on benchmarks, the Honor 50 is not entirely at the level of competing models located roughly in the same price segment.

Honor 50batterie

We feel it, one of the priorities of the Honor 50 is to offer a very pleasant grip to the user with a fine and light design. To get there, he will not seek a staggering capacity for his battery: 4300 mAh.However, do not believe that he does not do well endurance level.

On the contrary, although he is not the champion of this category, I did not really have to complain about the speed at which the Honor 50 loses his battery.I have always managed to go to the end of my active days of use.Depending on the intensity with which you serve, you can even sleep serenely without recharging it at night and hope to hold a little more than half a day with.

USB-C of Honor 50 // Source: Robin Wycke

However, if you tend to use your phone a lot, this peace of mind is no longer as important.Unfortunately, our target autonomy test protocol could not turn correctly on this device. That said, I can tell you, as an indication, that a part of Fortnite with all the parameters at the bottom consumes approximately 5 to 6 % battery in 15 minutes. It's in a correct average.

Good point, thanks to the load of 66 W, the Honor 50 goes from 10 to 85 % in 30 minutes.Less than 15 minutes later, we reach 100 % battery.

Honor 50reseau and communication

The Honor 50 is excellent for calls.Your interlocutor will clearly hear your voice with very little compression and will hardly hear the noises around, even when it is an old buses a few meters from you.The phone is also compatible with the 5G network, while on orange 4G I have not encountered the slightest concern for connection in the Paris region or in the south of France, to Nîmes and Avignon.

In addition, geolocation does not play a particular tour and we also take advantage of the NFC obviously. The Honor 50 also offers the use of two nano sims.

Honor 50Prix and release date

The Honor 50 was released in France at the beginning of November 2021 at the official price of 549 euros in the 6/128 GB configuration and 599 euros for the 8/256 Go declination. As indicated in this test, three colors are available: black, constellated green and "Honor Code" (the screen -printed declination).
