Despite the health context and the Omicron wave, the organizers of the CES have decided to maintain the event. Yet many large companies threw in the towel at the last minute. After the cancellation of the 2021 edition, another setback was obviously not an option.

The CES 2022 was therefore less flowery than in previous years. Sometimes the products were not even displayed. LG, for example, chose to reserve a space of several hundred square meters to display QR Codes on desks, QR Codes which then made it possible to see the products in 3D in augmented reality. We will therefore return to the interest of the device consisting in having journalists travel to the other side of the world to discover 3D reproductions that they could have consulted at home. Ecology all that all that.

Fortunately, most exhibitors played the game, so this CES 2022 was not without interest. Some brands like Samsung caught the eye, others played it more classic. Be that as it may, despite a delicate context, this CES 2022 has sometimes impressed. We therefore summarize the main trends of this 2022 edition.

Futuristic concept cars

This year, cars have had an even more prominent place than usual. While manufacturers have all started their transition to electric, some have had fun with dazzling concept cars.

In great shape, BMW unveiled two original vehicles. The first has a giant 8K screen in the cabin to watch films and series in the greatest of comforts. The second is a vehicle dressed in a material capable of blending into the decor like a chameleon. Thus, the car changes color in real time. Impressive.

Cadillac also stood out with a futuristic concept worthy of the best science fiction films. At General Motors, the star of the show was an autonomous and flying car. Just that.

Finally, Sony has set foot in the automotive industry with an electric SUV that has left no one indifferent.

Tesla's Vegas Tunnel

Still in the world of cars, Tesla has once again made the show. The company offered journalists and visitors the chance to experience its tunnel under Las Vegas. This project carried out in collaboration with The Boring Company aims to travel tens of kilometers underground in order to avoid traffic jams. On the course, several stations allow you to stop to go back to the surface.

Ever crazier TVs and monitors

The CES is traditionally the showcase for next-generation TVs. This edition is no exception even if the developments are not transcendent. Samsung has unveiled its QD-OLED TVs combining the excellent brightness of LCD technology with the high level of contrast of OLED. Panasonic, LG or Sony also went there with their TV ads.

The real innovations were more on the side of Samsung and Anker, which both unveiled portable projectors, the Freestyle for the first, the Cosmos Laser 4K for the second. These two devices make it possible to transform any surface into a cinema screen with image quality that can reach 4K definition and high brightness. Bluffing.

This CES 2022 was also that of monitors. Gaming and telework having taken a more important place in our homes since the health crisis, brands are rushing into the breach. Samsung (again) has unveiled the Odyssey Ark, a giant curved monitor that can also be oriented in portrait for a better multitasking experience. It will also delight players, of course. Alienware has also presented a monitor of its kind with the same QD-OLED technology, a first on this type of device.

PCs do you want some here

In the ocean of PCs presented at the show, three models particularly caught our attention. Let's start with the XPS 13 Plus, a Dell laptop that particularly won us over with its minimalist and futuristic design. Elegant, it will be marketed this year at a price between 1500 euros and 2000 euros. It will position itself as a direct competitor to Apple's MacBook Pro M1.

Asus has also multiplied the announcements but it is indeed its Zenbook 17 Fold. This 17 '' laptop has the particularity of integrating a foldable screen. It can therefore be used on a tablet or a PC. A keyboard accessory is then applied to it and the machine automatically switches to PC mode. When folded, the Zenbook Fold has a diagonal of 12.5 inches.

Finally, it's impossible to talk about PC at CES without mentioning Razer's Project Sophia. More than a PC, this concept is actually an ultra-connected desktop for gamers. Totally modular, it integrates the ultimate setup for players and/or streamers. From the screen to the webcam to the microphone, everything is there.

Foldable screen, CES star

As you have certainly noticed from reading the previous lines, many new concepts and products could never have existed without a foldable screen. A true red thread of this CES, this technology was present almost everywhere. On smartphones, tablets and even PCs.

Flexible tiles also affect other areas such as the automotive industry where this technology is necessary in interior design. On the business side, the prowess achieved by Samsung makes it possible to glimpse new advertising media.

Despite the Covid crisis, professionals in the sector were able to present technologies that are still just as innovative. And even if the coverage of the event was disrupted, the products were there to make us dream. See you in 2023 for a new edition of CES which, we hope, will not be disrupted by the health crisis.
